printing specifications

Pixel prefers Macintosh formatted files submitted by FTP, CD, ZIP, or email. It is recommended that all PC, Word, Excel, and obscure or extremely out-dated file types be converted to high-res (press optimized) PDFs to avoid font conflicts and additional production charges. EXTENSIONS MUST BE ADDED TO EVERY FILE! Please call with any questions or uncertainties before submitting files. Submissions may be made from the following programs:

QuarkXPress 6.5 or lower

  • Page size should equal the trim size.
  • Bleed any necessary elements 1/8" (.125") beyond the page setup.
  • All important text and graphics must remain 1/8" (.125") or more inside the trim (known as the “safety”).
  • Do not use Quark’s default red, green, or blue, or other RGB colors. They will not print properly.
  • Create colors in CMYK. Note: Pixel uses a process, Pantone Matching System. However, not all Pantone colors translate accurately to CMYK.
  • Color percentages of 25% and less may print poorly.
  • Collect for output including all screen and printer fonts, and pictures. Note: Make sure all graphics meet Pixel’s Photoshop and Illustrator guidelines.

Photoshop CS or lower

  • Documents should equal trim size plus 1/8” (.125”) bleed on all sides, if necessary.
  • All important text and graphics must remain 1/8” (.125”) or more inside the trim (known as the “safety”).
  • All files should be 300dpi at full size. Note: Very large files may be half or quarter size at 300dpi. Call with questions.
  • Work in CMYK or Grayscale mode. RGB files and Duotones using Pantones will not print as they appear on screen.
  • Flatten the image and save as .eps or .tif.
  • Do not save file as .jpg or .gif. These types are lossy file formats and are specifically for the web, and will reduce the print quality of the image.

Illustrator CS or lower

  • Page size should equal trim size.
  • Bleed any necessary elements 1/8" (.125") beyond the page setup.
  • All important text and graphics must remain 1/8" (.125") or more inside the trim (known as the “safety”).
  • Work in CMYK mode. Do not use RGB colors. Note: Pixel uses a process, Pantone Matching System. However, not all Pantone colors translate accurately to CMYK.
  • Outline all type. Note: Text heavy documents should be created in QuarkXPress or similar layout program. If no layout program is available, do not convert type to outline. Instead, include all used fonts with file.
  • Include or embed all linked images. Note: Do not use transparencies on linked or embedded images.
  • Save as .eps.

InDesign CS or lower

  • Page size should equal trim size.
  • Bleed any necessary elements 1/8" (.125") beyond the page setup.
  • All important text and graphics must remain 1/8" (.125") or more inside the trim (known as the “safety”).
  • Do not use RGB colors. They will not print properly.
  • Create colors in CMYK. Note: Pixel uses a process, Pantone Matching System. However, not all Pantone colors translate accurately to CMYK.
  • Preflight, then package document including all fonts and images.

Hi-Res PDF

  • PDFs should be created with Acrobat Distiller or other qualified Post Script Writer.
  • Use default settings for Hi-Res or Press Optimized PDF.
  • Document should equal trim size plus 1/8" (.125") bleed on all sides, if necessary.
